Harmony Garden

The subject of the project is to create a garden in a traditional Kyoto machiya (townhouse), where a large water circulation, flowing from the mountains to the sea, can be felt. The garden incorporates the water features of Higashiyama, represented by Nanzen-ji Temple, and most of the garden is designed as a pond. It has become a garden where a small ecosystem thrives in the inner courtyard of the machiya.

To create a sense that the waters of Higashiyama continue into this garden, a large pond was placed at the center of the inner courtyard and trees arranged around it. The direction of Higashiyama serves as the water source, with water flowing from a large boat-shaped stone, collecting and forming the pond, creating a natural and artistic flow.

By arranging the trees to extend outward around the pond, a natural landscape where the branches and leaves spread out in search of light were created.
